Hosting several people in a condo or apartment can sometimes be challenging. But it’s not impossible. In fact, there are many solutions to welcome your loved ones without having them feel “cramped.”
Ultimately, the art of hosting in a small space relies on planning, versatility, and attention to detail.
Make space
Before even thinking about the menu, you need to free up space.
First, it’s important to keep traffic areas clear. Guests should be able to move around without knocking over a glass or stepping on an extension cord!
Second, clear surfaces so they can be used efficiently during your gathering.
So, the pile of books on the coffee table, the large centerpiece, the blender on the kitchen counter… out of sight!
Tip: You can temporarily store these items in a closed cabinet inside, in an outdoor storage unit, or even in the trunk of your car (why not?).
Rethink each area
Once surfaces are clear, a side table can become a temporary bar, the TV unit can hold the dessert platter, and the bookshelf can host a few dishes.
Also, moving some furniture into unused rooms (like the bedroom or a hallway) for a few hours helps create a fluid traffic flow.
Once the main room is cleared, a warm atmosphere naturally settles in.
Create a cozy atmosphere without overloading
The magic of the Holidays often lies in the details. Even though your condo should feel uncluttered during the event, that doesn’t mean it should lack ambiance.
Choose decorative touches that take up little space:
- A string of lights on the wall
- Scented candles (pine or vanilla)
- Hanging decorations like golden stars
No need for a big tree: a small artificial one on a dresser or a simple greenery centerpiece works perfectly.
Smart seating solutions
Lack of seating is a classic problem in small condos.
To solve this, bring all possible seats into the main room, such as:
- Office chair
- Cushions (preferably in Holiday colors)
- Pouf or ottoman
- Storage chest (with a cushion for comfort)
Otherwise, pick up a few folding chairs!
Maximize vertical space
This tip often comes up when maximizing living areas! When floor space is limited, the walls are your ally.
Install hooks to hang coats, use floating shelves for desserts or drinks, or even hang wine glasses underneath a countertop.
Manage temperature and comfort
A condo full of guests heats up quickly. It can help to slightly lower the temperature before they arrive.
Plan a space to store coats and boots to avoid chaos at the entrance. A large plastic bin or a coat rack can do the trick.
A well-planned buffet
A traditional multi-course meal can be difficult to manage in a small space. A buffet is a practical option that lets everyone serve themselves at their own pace while reducing logistics.
Choose foods that are easy to eat without needing full cutlery. Meat bites, savory tartlets, small vegetable-and-tofu skewers, deviled eggs, or cheese and charcuterie platters make service easier and free up table space.
A cold buffet also allows for advance preparation, avoiding constant trips to the oven. Result: less stress, more fun.
A reminder of the rules for your guests
Although neighbors are generally more tolerant of noise during the Holidays, it can be important to remind guests of condo rules (especially since violations may result in fines).
For example: loud conversations in the hallway, children playing in common areas, music that’s too loud, or smoking on the balcony.
And above all, remember that your gathering doesn’t need to be perfect! No matter the size of your space, what truly matters is the joy shared around—even a small—table.
